5 Simple Ways to Stay Positive


So it’s a week into the new year and if you’re like most people you might be feeling overwhelmed keeping up with your new year resolution, the back-to-work excitement ran out, or the good news shared by others is making your life feel dull. Don’t fret. Follow these 5 easy steps back on the road to positivity and happiness! 

  1. Make a list. Write down the things that you are grateful for and things that make you smile. You will be shocked at how long the list is. It is natural for us to get down on ourselves – maybe it’s a goal we didn’t reach, or something we’ve done that we wish we didn’t do – regardless, there are way more positive things going on in your life to let one thing bring you all the way down. For starters, you woke up today. Write that down.
  2. Spend time alone. Okay, this one sounds strange. Think about it though, how many times have you been brought down by others. Coworkers complaining, your boyfriend whining, and your bff’s latest rant. Hello, can a girl just be happy? Sometimes spending QT time with yours truly is just what the doctor ordered. Grab a book or pop in your fav flick and just do what you want to do. Nobody can bring you down when you’re in your own little world. 
  3. Spend time with friends and family. Wait, am I contradicting the last statement? Nope! Sometimes being alone is necessary and other times you need your favorite people to pick you up! Call your brother, mom, roommate or friend and go to the movies, or lunch, or just hang out and chat. Laughs are sure to be a part of whatever you do and laughter is contagious. 
  4. Don’t take it personally. A lot of times our negative emotions are actually caused by others – whether it is listening to someone complain about their life or someone taking out their anger and emotions on you – it never fails to create pessimism in ourselves and bring us down in the dumps. Remind yourself that just because someone else is feeling bad/sad, does not mean that you have to. If you were having a great day before you were emotionally interrupted, then continue in your own path of happiness. 
  5. Work out. Yep, as overplayed and cliche as it sounds, it’s a surefire way to keep you happy. When you exercise your body releases chemicals called endorphins and these interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception and pain. Endorphins can also trigger a positive feeling in the body which will ultimately leave you feeling more positive and happier post workout. Who’s ready to hit the gym?

So there you have it. 5 extremely easy things you can do when you’re feeling any negative emotions creeping in. I can’t promise you won’t ever feel defeated, but I can promise it will always be temporary! There is so much to be thankful for that makes our life so wonderful. Make sure you share the love!


It’s 2014! ROCK ON!

  • Get a new job… a career… not just a job.
  • Read a book each month
  • Visit three places I’ve never been
  • Complete a detox cleanse
  • Do a one month arm workout challenge
  • Be happier
  • Make sure my loved ones know how much they mean to me

There you have it. A few of my resolutions to make 2014 a better year for me. I am always trying to better myself… and I know that sounds cliché, but I am. Sometimes I slip and forget, or just get lazy, but this year I’ve set clear, specific resolutions that can easily be met. Heads up – number 1 on my list is already complete! My 2014 started off with a BANG!

4 Songs on the radio right now that make me smile… no matter what!

This might or might not be my most cliche post of all time, and I’m totally okay with that! Music is SO powerful and I am completely obsessed with it. When I’m sad, music makes me happy. When I’m angry, music calms me down. Music is so powerful that when I’m happy, it can even make me sad! But today I’m focused on music that makes me smile. When any of these 4 songs come on the radio, I cannot keep still. I will be cruising down the highway rocking out just having a good time and enjoying the song and all of a sudden come to a red light and forget that other people can see me – I totally get the weirdest looks. But you know what? I don’t care… I love it! I’m happy and having a great time – and that’s what life is all about!

What really makes people happy?

Because we need more of it!!

A study conducted in April 2013 revealed that Americans are less happy than they were in 2011. Here is a breakdown of some of the results:

  • Women are slightly happier than men (35% to 32%)
  • Democrats and Republicans are equally “very happy” (35%), but happier than political independents (32%)
  • While 75% of Americans were optimistic about the future in 2011, only 67$ reported feeling upbeat this year
  • College graduates happiness has decreased from 35% to 32%
  • Americans with disabilities who qualified as “very happy” has dipped from 34% to 31%

These findings are telling us that people are more unsatisfied with their lives, or at least some component of their lives. I wish I could sit here and tell you I disagree and they just happened to poll all the unhappy people in America, but I’d be lying! I think I’m less “happy” and it’s not my day-to-day life that I am unhappy with, it’s more about the big picture.

So the study shows that recent college grads are less happy than prior years… does this surprise anyone? I happen to fall into this category. It’s no shocker that the job market has decline over the years, and while we see it improving, it hasn’t been a significant change. So college grads can’t find a job, but their student loans don’t care. Recent grads are forced to fork over hundreds of dollars every month even if they haven’t landed that dream job yet. One can see how this might affect someone’s happiness!

There are times when things like the job marketing and debt will put a damper on our lives, but we must not let it paralyze us from the rest of the beauty among us. We can only hope that the job market gets better and better each day and just keep doing the best that we can! From my experience, I’ve learned that everything works itself out! My advice is to focus on what does make you happy and takes your mind off of what brings unhappiness into your life!

As the saying goes, don’t worry be happy!

Commit to Fit – June

Happy JUNE! It’s time to get FIT! As I mentioned before, laziness has been the main barrier stopping me from working out! That excuse just isn’t good enough. So, here is my June schedule for the Commit to Fit program I am implementing in my life! You should follow along and challenge yourself to make time everyday for these short exercises! Think about how awesome you will feel on June 30th. I can’t wait to see how toned my arms are when I knock out 30 push ups in a row! 😉 That’s what I’m talking about!

I will be adding cardio and other exercises as well, but this is my morning burst! This is what I plan to do before work each day to jump-start my day! If you want to stick to this program only – that’s fine, too! This is a beginner program so feel free to do this as best you can and don’t worry about anything else! I do recommend some type of cardio if you are trying to lose weight. This program will mostly help tone.
